Apple Music Discover

Imagining a fun, personalized listening experience

Overview

Spotify’s “Year in Rewind,” featuring eye catching graphics visualizing annual listening habits has generated viral trends on TikTok and Instagram. Many Apple Music users feel like they’re missing out.

For my final project in UX Design @ NYU Integrated Design & Media, I was tasked with betting the user experience of an existing product. I chose Spotify competitor, Apple Music! Though there are unique features like Spatial Audio and Lossless streaming for audiophiles, Apple Music lacks Spotify’s “cool factor.”

How’s Apple Music doing?

TikToker opinions

The popular sentiment is that Spotify is the platform for listeners who are plugged into the trends and the pulse of culture. Users complain that the suggested music curations aren’t accurate, and that they feel left out during Spotify Rewind season at the end of every year.

In the media

“Apple offers a similar year-in-review in the form of Apple Music Replay… do you really want to be the one person on your social feed using the off-brand version?”

CNN

“While virtually everyone I know on Twitter and Instagram is spending the entirety of today putting their personal taste in music on blast, I get... a playlist of the songs that I listened to the most this year.”

The Verge

Marketshare

Spotify leads the marketshare, with 32% of the global streaming subscribers in Q1 of 2021… there’s an opportunity here to make Apple Music competitive and keep up with the trends.
